Minimally Invasive Heart Surgery

The way heart surgery is performed is changing. It’s been our goal to make heart surgery less painful and more acceptable. Heart surgery does not have to disrupt life. MICS has several advantages that are beneficial.

What We Offer

The Minimally Invasive program at Apollo Hospital Bangalore was initiated in 2009. Since then we have performed close to 1600 operations with a safety record thats on par with any other program in the world. We are proud to say that we conduct several training programs and have visiting surgeons come in from across the world to watch while we perform complex minimally invasive heart operations. We perform some of the most advanced cardiac procedures in the world and some of them are considered the bench mark in cardiac surgery.
Our goal is to provide excellence in cardiac care that’s on par with the most advanced heart hospitals in the world. We constantly endeavour to perfect the science we practice while continuing to contribute to its advancement.

Our Work Flow

Preoperative Screening

Patients and their families are met the day prior in the outpatient department. The procedure required, the technique and other relevant information is shared. Building confidence and eliminating fear are focussed on during this meeting.

In Hospital Course

Most admissions happen a day prior to the procedure, usually in the afternoon. Surgeries are usually completed in under 2 hours. They stay overnight in the ICU and the families can generally stay at home. Most (80%) patients are shifted to the ward the next day. Discharge is planned and can happen as early as 48 hours.

Post Operative Followup

Post operative follow ups are scheduled prior to discharge. The first checkup can happen anywhere between 4 days to 1 week. The second follow up happens a week later and the last a month later. Subsequent follow ups are at 3 months, 6 months and a year.

Frequently Asked Questions

We understand that you may have several questions that are unanswered. It’s possible that you may unhappy with the treatment options you are given. Often it may not possible to have all your questions answered when you meet your doctor. For this reason we have an FAQ page for every procedure that most likely will address your fears. It’s important that you understand the disease and its treatment, we therefore suggest that you go through FAQ’s. In the event that you still have questions please feel free to meet your surgeon with an appointment. You can also contact the helpdesk and leave a message so as to allow your doctor to call back.

What age group of patients do you work with?
We work with patients of all age groups from infants to the elderly well into their nineties. However our focus is on mostly adult patients. While we are exceptionally good in complex open procedures irrespective of age, our special expertise is with minimally invasive heart surgery. Our skills with these minimal access operations makes us that much more skilled with open procedures. Our experience and training at some of the finest hospitals in North America gives us an incredible edge to managing the elderly. Almost 20 to 30% of our work is in treating patients above the age of 75 years.
What is your turn around time?
The turnaround time varies depending on the procedure. With MICS surgeries the turnaround time can be as short as 72 hours. With conventional open heart procedures the duration of hospitalisation can extend upto 5 or 6 days. Its important to remember that your age, fitness and condition of your heart prior to surgery will determine how long you stay in hospital following the procedure.

Do you have an affiliate program?
The Apollo Hospital’s as a group has several hospitals spread across the country. Most of these hospitals perform heart surgery. However majority of the minimally invasive work is exclusively performed in Apollo, Bangalore. This is particularly so with multi vessel bypass. If fact multi vessel bypass is performed only by the team headed by Dr Nambala at Apollo, Bangalore. No other centre in India can perform this procedure with the same expertise.
